How Stretchy Bits Work
Stretchy Bits is a modular needlepoint stretcher bar system made from individual one-inch pieces. Connect only the number you need to build a frame for the canvas in front of you, then reconfigure the pieces for whatever you want to stitch next.
It means fewer fixed-size stretcher bars to buy, pack, store, and keep track of. It also means you can start the canvas you brought with you, even if the exact stretcher bars you need are sitting at home.
1. Connect the Bits
Press the pieces together to create the length you need for each side of your frame.
Every Stretchy Bit has the same modular design. The same piece can continue a straight side or rotate to form a corner, so there are no separate corner pieces to find.
2. Build Your Frame
Connect four sides around your canvas, adding or removing one-inch pieces until you have the frame size you need.
You can reconfigure the same set for canvases of different sizes. When the piece count allows, you can also divide one set between multiple smaller projects.
3. Attach Your Canvas
Position your needlepoint canvas over the completed frame and attach it with your preferred needlepoint tacks.
Start near the center of each side and work outward, alternating between opposite sides as you go. The thin outer surface of each Bit is designed to accept tacks while the interior provides lightweight structure.
4. Stitch, Then Reconfigure
Stitch with your canvas supported, then remove the tacks and take the frame apart when you are ready to use the pieces for another project or size.
Like traditional wooden stretcher bars, Stretchy Bits are reusable, but repeated tacking will naturally create wear over time.
Why Stretchy Bits?
- Build frames in one-inch increments
- Use the same modular pieces for straight sides and corners
- Reconfigure one set for different canvas sizes
- Start another canvas without hunting down another fixed-size set
- Lightweight enough for comfortable stitching and travel
- Available in colors designed to be seen
A Note About Tension and Finishing
Stretchy Bits are designed to support your canvas and help maintain tension while you stitch. Individual stitching styles, canvas types, project sizes, and finishing methods vary, so they are not presented as a guarantee that a finished canvas will never require blocking.
